Overview
The University of Melbourne is offering the prestigious Melbourne Research Scholarship and the Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship to high-achieving graduate research students. These scholarships are available to both domestic and international students who are enrolling in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.
Benefits and Coverage
- Full Fee Offset: 100% fee remission for up to two years for students undertaking a Master’s by Research degree, or up to four years for doctoral students.
- Living Allowance: A stipend of $38,500 per year (2025 full-time study rate), pro rata. This allowance is available for up to two years for Master’s students or up to 3.5 years for doctoral students. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave.
- Relocation Grant: Students moving from interstate (outside Victoria) will receive a $2,000 grant, while international students moving from overseas will receive $3,000.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): Single membership provided for international students requiring a student visa to study in Australia.

Eligibility
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- Have applied for and meet the requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or
- Be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.
Selection Criteria
- All domestic students who are offered admission to a Master’s by Research or doctoral degree (PhD) at the University of Melbourne will automatically receive a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset).
- Graduate Research Scholarships providing both a stipend and fee offset are awarded to both domestic and international students based on academic merit.
- Applicants are ranked according to their academic performance in their last completed degree and their research potential within their chosen field of study. Other factors such as relevant professional experience, refereed publications, specialist medical qualifications, or original music compositions may also be considered.

How to Apply
- New students: If you applied for a graduate research course by the application deadline, you will be automatically considered for the Graduate Research Scholarships. You will receive a notification within ten business days that a scholarship application has been added to your record.
- Deferred students: If you have accepted a graduate research course offer but deferred your commencement to be reconsidered for a scholarship, you must submit an online application form by 31 October to be considered for the following year.
- Currently enrolled students: If you are already enrolled in a graduate research course, you must submit an online application form by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the upcoming year.

When will I know the outcome?
- Domestic students will receive an offer for the Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) along with their course offer.
- Offers for Graduate Research Scholarships that provide both a stipend and fee offset are made separately but are typically offered around the same time as course offers.
